" When she disappeared from public view in the mid-2000s, it was said that she was in rehab for alcoholism. Philip Shenon wrote in a Daily Beast post that diplomats and Korea watchers "have no reason, they say, to question reports that she is a raging alcoholic whose relationship with her own children has been poisonous. " Her daughter committed suicide in France in 2009.
