Order of Canada Investiture Ceremony One of the delights for all of us at Rideau Hall is to honour our country most accomplished citizens on behalf of all Canadians.http://www.bigheadis.com/glanhs.asp I privileged today to be in the company of men and women who join the ranks of the most talented, wise and generous people our country has ever produced. You express your talent through different disciplines of human endeavour. Yours is a wide spectrum of triumph that spans science, athletics, business, advocacy, fashion, public service, health care and medicine, journalism and broadcasting, culture and the performing arts. While your fields and accomplishments differ, you are united. United in a singular desire to use your talent, wisdom and generosity to enrich our country and enhance the lives of your fellow citizens. That impulse, combined with your exceptional success in following it, has elevated you into an accomplished group of Canadians Order of Canada. The honour you receive today is precious. Investiture in the Order of Canada pays tribute to people whose service has been instrumental in bettering our country, in making Canada a smarter, more caring place for all. I am delighted to salute your achievements, to honour your creative, caring spirits, to welcome you into this exclusive club of outstanding Canadians. But in saluting your achievements, I am especially conscious that each of you has voluntarily undertaken the profound responsibility of service. For that is the other side of the coin which captures the Order motto: desire a better country. You have turned desire into action and accomplishment. You embody that lovely couplet from Shaw: people see things as they are and wonder I dream of things that ought to be and ask, not? welcome to the not club. ask one small favour in return. It springsfrom my watching Christopher Plummer press conference at the most recent Academy Awards. Christopher Companion of the Order of Canada asked what the pin on his lapel represented. He replied that he was delighted to inform everyone that it was for a world-famous honour he had received Order of Canada that he wore the pin to remind himself that he must always represent the best of his country when he was abroad. With Christopher Plummer example in mind, I ask you to please wear your insignia regularly with deserved pride. And when others home or abroad you what the snowflake on your lapel represents, tell them your story and what you did to earn it. I know you will not do so out of arrogance fact, some are shy about wearing the snowflake I ask you to do so to inspire your fellow Canadians to create a better country. Do so not out of mere nationalist sentiment but out of a truthful enthusiasm to inspire and inform people everywhere of the personal qualities and shared values that Canadians revere: fairness, opportunity, equality, generosity, excellence. You in this room embody these singular Canadian values. You express them in your deeds. In so doing, your lives are testaments to the noblest principles, attributes and achievements to which any man or woman can aspire.
